Step by step

Film Industry provide varirty of job opportunities, it depends on your educational background, past experience,skills , interests and social network. Once you make sure your goal/ found out the position which suitable for you, begin preparing to make a effort to enter the film industry. This blog will list some strategies of how to enter in the film industry.

  1. Education & Course
  • Education: learning a media/film/theater degree in the univerdity or study in a film school through learning a variety of course such as introduction to filmmaking , screenwriting , cinematography , editing , directing… can obtained systematically specialised knowledge and skills for preparing to get successed in the film industry. Also, school will offering maximise resources , equipment and facilities (eg. cameras/lenses/sound epuipment /editing suites) to support students for creative learning.
  • Course:There are some online platform , media company and Education Institution teach filmmaking(including documentary) and film crew related short courses. When the student finished the course , they will get certificate.

2.Skills (soft skill & hard skill)

  • Soft Skill: Communication , Time management , Stress management ,Teamwork and Problem Solving Skills are critical skills for success in film school/ university . The author mentioned that when students are juggling multiple tasks, deadlines and responsibilities, learning to effectively manage the time and deal with stress is very sigificant. It will not only improve academic performance, but also it will enhance the well being and productivity(filmd,2024) . The FILMD (2024) talked about the critical thinking , creative , imaginative , flexibility and adaptability can cultivate a positive and supportive mindest for maintaining long-term creativity and passion.
  • Hard Skill: Photography , Editing , Photoshop, Copyweiting , Plan and Organise Skills , Office Software …

3.Experience(in school+ outside school)

  • In School: Work as a member in Student Union’s Arts Department, Publicity Department, New Media Center, Student Club Activities and Radio Station. Meanwhile, actively participate in campus clactivities to be a volunteer.
  • Outside school: Volunteering at large scale events such as film/music/theater fesivals and do intership at film crews, TV Station, photography studios, new media /internet /news /movie /publicity / entertainment / film & television /MCN /short video companies allowa us to understand film production processes, build professional networks and develop stress resistance, execution and coordination skills. The ScreenAustralia(2021) found out most state screen agencies require production that receive a certain level of taxpayer funding to offer opportunities for creative talents.

4. Where & How to get the Job

  • Where: (1) Searching for target positions or jobs of interest on social media and job platforms/websites such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Seek and Screenhub (2) The writer suggested that If you’re serious about getting a crew work, it best to go to the production hub like New York, Los Angeles or Atlanta and Join some pertinent organizations(BACKSTAGE 2024).
  • How: (1) prepare a resume ( The resume should briefly & clearly introduced who you are, the job yor’re applying for and why you suitable for this job) . In addition, the resume need to include the availability time, Education background/training, self evaluation, Internship/Campus/Volunteer Experience and any skills/qualifications ( like: driving license). (2) Develop a portfolio: It should contained the related film works and If you’re applying to camera or postproduction jobs it should have the photography/editing works. (3) Running your own self- media accounts to showcase your skills,creativity andversatility.

5. Advice

  • Get to know the teachers, classmates and senior students in the media/film production major and maintain good relationship with them.
  • Follow industry experts/professionals on social media and interact with them.
  • Read more and watch more movies/TV shows/variety shows to build up the knowledge base.
  • Jason Allen discovered that it is important to make sure whether you like the job because ‘If you don’t like long hours, hard work and lack of personal time. The job may not for you’.

Making a movie is difficult and becoming a film promoter is not a easy task. It requires persistence, accumulation and long-term passion.
